Adventures of Meo – Part one

The beginning of a new chapter

Mia and Leo sat on the couch, their faces crumbled with exhaustion but still radiating pure joy. As they watched, their newborn, Meo yawned and shifted in his sleep. They could have sworn they saw nothing cuter, and observed for several more minutes in reverent silence. They had welcomed a new member of the family, one who was so tender and yet so dangerous.

They would never let anything or anyone hurt him. Not their own parents. Not the expectations of the world. No twisted ideology. Leo’s eyes shined as he cleared his throat. Mia knew what was coming. She could sense his guilt from what he had said yesterday.

“A knife?? We can’t do this! We already are so ostracised! What would happen after that? We’d be asked to shift over to the basement!”

At the moment, Mia had sobbed, realising the danger they’d be in as well as their newborn if he or she ever saw the daylight.  The heart of a mother, however, found it hard to succumb to the norms of society. And she kept the child. The knife. And when Meo did nothing but slept peacefully, Leo realized how wrong he was to even consider putting him for adoption.

It wasn’t like he forgot about how risky it was to have a knife, despite him being a fork and his wife, a spoon, but he would much rather face the world with his kid, rather than let Meo out there, more vulnerable than any other newborn out there.

After all, abandoned knives weren’t known to have a good childhood.

Leo stared at the ground. “I can’t believe I was going to—“

The lingering regret of ‘what did I almost do’, a feeling almost rare but deep, weighed him down and his words remained stuck at his throat.

Mia placed a gentle hand on his shoulder. “Meo will be safe, and he will grow up happy. We will make sure of it”

Leo could only nod. He didn’t trust his voice being overwhelmed by all these emotions.

Little Meo’s fingers twitched for barely a second, as he slept soundly, as if wanting to wake up from his cozy dream and announce his presence to this world.

In a world where rules were set for each type of cutlery before they were born, except for knives, for they were known to break each and every single one, Leo and Mia promised to turn Meo into a sweet gentleman. And hence they decided to monitor every tiny step of Meo, in order to push the child, gently in the right direction.

The right direction, being the one that Melissa claims, is right.

Author’s Note🖤 :-
