Adventures of Meo – Part four

Soon enough, Mr Harrington opened the door, and Meo put on a sassy smile as he couldn’t fake a genuine one.

The older man, in his late thirties, opened the door with a big smile. “Ahh little Meo, how great to see you again! Please, come in”

Meo entered his house, clutching the straps of his backpack and looking around. It was always as lavish as his own home. As he walked to the room, where Mr Harrington normally gave him tuitions, a loud frustrated scream was heard. It was that of a woman. Meo jumped.

Mr Harrington shook his head and looked at the little boy. “Do not worry my dear Meo, it’s only my overdramatic neighbour. I shall go have a look. In the meantime, revise our last lesson”

Meo agreed happily, a small smile forming in his face. He was happy as he only had 60 minutes fixed with him and he’d get to go home sooner with less tuition time.

And so he entered the usual room and waited. But when several more minutes went by, he got curious. ‘Dad says curiosity got the cat killed. But…I’m a fork. I should be fine’

And so he peeked out the door and could make out muffled phrases. It was a woman, perhaps the one who had screamed. He could also make the deep resounding timber of Mr Harrington’s voice. He tiptoed to the back of the house and hid behind a couch. An exceptionally beautiful fork lady, in her late 20s, stood there, face red, and yelling at Mr Harrington.

“HARRINGTON!! Tell your pet to stay with you!!! He just ruined my bloody dinner, by jumping on my frying pan!” Sure enough, a small bottle cap, absolutely adorable, runs across, happily with a piece of bacon in his mouth.

Mr Harrington blinked. “Who even eats bacon for dinner?” That seemed to make the woman even angrier and she let out yet another scream that made Meo flinch behind the couch. “Don’t you dare question my dinner choices!”

She exhaled, nose flaring and then paused. Meo could tell she had something to use against Mr Harrington. “Perhaps what you should question, is why people like…you, are still roaming around like you’re normal”

Meo felt his little fists clench with anger. He didn’t know what she meant but he couldn’t tolerate disrespect against Mr Harrington. Sure he found him boring and maybe a bit annoying. But hearing someone else talk to him like that, made his blood boil.

However he noticed that the older man barely reacted. As if this was a normal occurrence. “Go to bed Melissa, we have a meeting at the ministry tomorrow at 8 am. I shall no longer entertain or hear your opinions as I have better things to do”

Meo frowned. ‘Melissa?’ He was sure he had heard that name before but he couldn’t tell where. He knew he wouldn’t have time to think more about this. Mr Harrington probably stopped the conversation with Melissa as he remembered he had to give him tuition.

And so he ran back quickly to the room and pretended that he was reading a book the whole time. Mr Harrington took a marker upon arriving and started writing on the board the minute he arrived. He glanced at Meo with a smirk. “Do you know what we will be learning today child?”

Meo, adrenaline still rushing through him from barely having made it, back in the room in time, shook his head. Mr Harrington wrote on the board. “Why should we never eavesdrop”

Meo froze and shot Mr Harrington a sheepish smile. That man was too clever. Maybe the little boy being out of breath gave it away. Or maybe he really was a genius.

But one question never left Meo’s mind.  Why was Melissa so mean and what did she mean about people like Mr Harrington ?
