Some years later at the kitchen table
The first few years of Meo were…eventful to say the least. He grew into a five year old boy who had a big heart and the expected level of mischief a knife would have.
His day started with watching Cuttles, as usual. An app, his parents, well all parents in the Cutlery world, were notoriously known to despise. “It’s a bad influence on you” Leo huffed with disapprovement as Meo’s hand moved to grab his spoon of cereal. His curious eyes however, were on his little tablet instead, causing him to splash milk all over the table.
Some drops dripped down Leo’s morning glasses and Meo shot him an apologetic smile. “Yeah…yeah, tablet’s down dad, got the message”
Mia shook her head fondly and grabbed a cloth to wipe the table. “Oh it’s okay sweetie, mistakes happen”
Meo nodded, “You’re the best mom” And hilariously enough, noticed the expression of his dad, stiffen. “Oh and, you too, dad!”
Leo shook his head as he grumpily ate his toast. “Your school teacher mentioned, you broke a grinder the other day? How does a 5 year old kid break a grinder?”
Meo gulped. He couldn’t afford to tell the entire truth. Or it would mean, his dad would confiscate yet another one of his toy. ‘I can’t lose my electronic car. The robot is already gone’
He managed to find an excuse. “I slipped and accidentally pushed a grinder. The drawer was open and the grinder fell on the edge, breaking into a few pieces. Very fragile and weak brand, if you ask me”
What he didn’t reveal, was that he purposefully threw the grinder in the drawer to break it, so class would be cancelled and he’d get to come home earlier than normal.
Mia’s motherly instincts sharpened as she glanced at Meo. “Just…be careful next time, sweetie” But she didn’t escalate the matter. She was very well aware of her husband’s temper and the increasing tenacity of Meo to fight back during arguments. And one, between a fork and a spoon never seemed to end well.
As Leo got up and adjusted his tie, leaving for his office, he turned to Meo. “Don’t forget, you have a tuition class with Mr Harrington this evening” Meo groaned in annoyance. He always dreaded those boring lectures on how to become a young smart and intellectual knife. He didn’t understand why his parents forced him to attend those, every weekend.
But already being in hot water since a while now and not wanting his parents to use the school’s written warning as an excuse or additional moral class, he nodded with reluctance. “Yes dad, got it!” Downing the rest of his milk, he resumed playing with his toys.
A small shiny grey car, colliding against a big truck, again and again, seemed to amuse him. He repeated the action over and over again, careful to stay hidden behind the couch, to escape the eyes of his mother. He didn’t understand why, they forbade him from doing things he actually liked. Things like, jumping up and down the couch, while punching the air, or pulling pranks that made the class laugh.
He also questioned internally why he had to meet up with Mr Harrington—or Mr Boring as he used to call him in his head, every weekend while his friends stayed home and had fun. But he couldn’t say no to his parents, no matter what. Not for this. They could spoil him a lot and even let him skip school, once in a while.
But Mr Harrington? No there was no escape from this.
Later that day, as the moon shone bright and pretty, after dinner, Mia and Leo dropped Meo at the door of the wise man. The legend himself, Mr Harrington for one hour of tuition.
Meo looked around the fences. He could escape if he wanted to, but he was too short, and wearing slippers instead of shoes. He knew, he’d slip easily. Plus his parents wouldn’t drive off until Harrington opened the door.
Accepting his fate, he rung the doorbell.
